Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when overgrowth and swelling of the tissues create pressure on the median nerve passing through the narrow canal at the base of the palm known as the "carpal tunnel".

Symptoms

  • Numbing or tingling sensation in fingers and/or wrist
  • Pain in fingers and up arm to shoulder
  • Decrease is feeling, strength and/or grip
  • Awaken from sleep by numbness and/or tingling
  • Numbness exacerbated by strenuous use of hands

Causes

  • Repetitive and forceful movements of wrist
  • Holding wrist in awkward positions for long periods of time
  • Activities involving tight gripping or stresses on wrist

Treatment

  • Wrist and hand strengthening exercises
  • Splinting of wrist
  • Anti-flammatory medication
  • Cortisone injections
  • Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery

Prevention

  • Keep your wrists straight
  • Keep elbows at a right angle
  • Minimize repetitive activities and alternate tasks
  • Give your hands brief and frequent rests
  • Strengthen your hands through exercises to wrist and fingers
  • Notify supervisor at first sign of recurring wrist and/or hand pain
  • Consult a physician upon prolonged wrist and/or hand pain
